Memorandums in Idleness
“In Idleness” originates from “徒然草 Tsurezuregusa – Essays in Idleness” by 吉田兼好 Yoshida Kenko also known as 兼好法師 Kenkou Houshi – a Buddhist monk.
He was a famous Kajin 歌人- a tanka (短歌) Poet from the end of Kamakura’s Period 鎌倉時代 (AD.1283) to The period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties 南北朝時代 (AD.1352).

The Essays “徒然草” is especially famous in his works.
It was written between 1330 and 1331, and and is a collection of 243 essays.
The subject is very multifaceted, so it is very difficult to classify the essays into each subject. Such as mutability, nature, love, seeking after truth, human being, daily life, intellectuals-ancient rites, public entertainment, etc.
However, the Essay sticks to the unchangeable spirit.
It is said that all originates from having keen powers of observation getting to the heart of a matter and flexible consideration that is not bound to fixed ideas.
Also, It shows he had a great sensibility and intelligence.

The Essay has kept popular, as a book thinking about human’s way of life, with people from The Edo period to the present.
The first paragraph of the Essay is especially famous as a beautiful passage showing a brilliant talent of poet.

(Japanese Original)
“ つれづれなるままに、 tsurezure narumama ni
日くらし、硯に向ひて、 higurashi suzuri ni mukahite
心にうつりゆくよしなしごとを, kokoroni utsuriyuku yoshinashigotoo
そこはかとなく書きつくれば、 sokohakatonaku kakitsukureba
あやしうこそものぐるほしけれ ” ayashiukoso monoguruhoshikere

“ Since I have nothing to do,
and have lots of time in my hangs,
all day long I sit facing the ink-stone,
writing down somehow trivial things changing with time in my mind,
I feel like I’m losing my mind.”

Now, also I am fascinated with the first paragraph, so I got the idea of creating this blog.
In the blog, I aim to write down in idleness trivial things changing with time in my mind by words and images.
It is a memorandum in idleness like just “Essays in Idleness” by 兼好法師 Kenkou Houshi – a Buddhist monk.
In other words, it shows going back and forth with time, past, present and future.
It might mean one of “ Journey to time” in my old home page.
It consisted of three elements.
One is traveling to this day.
One is traveling to that day.
One is traveling to lost time.

Moreover, in the new blog I aim to add on yet other categories, including “traveling to tomorrow”,”traveling to story”, “traveling to poem”, “traveling to movie”, etc.
That is why I felt empathy with the following words in “Traveling to 17 words” By essayist 広瀬裕子-Hirose Hiroko: From 文芸春秋-Bungei shunzhuu-1/june/2017issue- 6th numerber- 95th vol.

“From the forest of words having lots in layers,
selecting one word with groping for,
pulling memories closer to oneself,
the process creating a poem with combining them,
it’s just similar to traveling.
The time I have spent until now and the time being now,
they show new scenes with each poem.
It’s the same fresh as first viewing in a trip,
so, teach the way of cutting new view of the world to me.”

The summer’s grass all that’s left of ancient warriors’ dreams. – Basho 芭蕉
夏草や 兵どもが 夢の跡
natsukusaya tsuwamono domoga yumeno ato

This is just similar to the way of composition or trimming in photographing, as the scene in front of one’s eyes shows a new view of scene.
Now, in forming a plan about new blog, I am revolving in my mind like so.

However、the basic stance in this blog is memorandum writing down ” In idleness”.
More flexibly and in idleness I aim to write down trivial things changing with time in my mind by words and images.

In addition, Iromegane 色眼鏡 says the following.
“As he said, he wrote this because he had too much to spare. Since the internet wasn’t invented in 14th century, Yoshida had to write his random thoughts on the paper, using a brush and the ink. But this book can be understood as one of the oldest blog or Twitter in Japan. If you think this way, the classic books become more familiar.”
